Digital Fabrication | Subtraction | 2023

For this Digital Fabrication project, I got the chance to be in a group. we created wall decor

I did this project in a group with Drew and we discussed how we wanted to incorporate our game design major into our minor project. We loved the look of a motherboard with intricate, busy wires. This inspiration gave us the idea of creating our own circuit board out of wood, using two puzzle-like pieces that will connect together to represent the connection a motherboard has to everything inside a computer. Jade was also interested in added a skull into the design somehow, as she thinks that the design of a skull is super symmetrical and an interesting feature to a design, especially experimenting with different types of skulls or bones.

We took the idea of the motherboard and decided we wanted to develop it further. After discussing it over again, we looked how the mother board looks to us. It gives off this busy, fast-paced motion of energy. This made us think of how it seems metaphorically represents the fast pace movement of technology and how quick we have innovated tech and how fast it progressing. This inspired us as we came up with the idea to use the past and possible future with technology as we plan to use an old Victorian necklace design as our framing as it represents the past before technology started booming. We also took inspiration from the future using the motherboard as a background and death of humans as the focus point showing what might come of us is we keep creating advancements and not looking and the effects it causes on humanity.

For this project I was the main designer of these wall art pieces, and drew was more the creation of the pieces within Rhino.

After modelling this design in Rhino, we tried to laser cut the model. Ultimately, we were told that the pixelated model was way too detailed and complicated to cut. We were told our pixelated design wouldn't work for the cutter and decided to scrap that idea and go for the smoother look.

Drew's Work:

Our last model was supposed to be our final, but due to miscommunication, we had to either change the size or get rid of our tiny details that we had in our design. The drill that we were using to cut or design was 6 mm and our cuts and engravings being 3 mm we had to remodel them to be thicker, so the drill could fit. So ultimately we had to change the measurements of all the cuts and engravings to fit the drill size. We also chose to remove small details like the cat’s teeth, as it would be way too difficult to achieve with the 6 mm drill.

But due to us changing and getting rid of some detail on our final design, on a more positive note this would also cut down the time it would take to cut our design.
